Mental Health Support for Children and Parents of Neurodivergent Kids

Overview

Parenting a neurodivergent child can be deeply rewarding—and deeply challenging. Modern Health offers support for parents and caregivers navigating this journey, including one-on-one coaching and therapy, digital resources, and Circles. If your benefit plan includes minor dependent coverage, your child may also be eligible for therapy with a provider who specializes in working with neurodivergent children.

What Is Neurodivergence?

Neurodiversity describes all the different ways individuals' brains work. Neurodivergent children think, learn, or behave differently than what is considered neurotypically "average"—and these differences are not deficits. Many neurodivergent children have exceptional strengths alongside the challenges they face.

Common neurodivergent conditions in children include:

  • ADHD: Patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness

  • Autism: Differences in social or sensory processing, often accompanied by strengths like exceptional focus or pattern recognition

  • Dyslexia: Difficulty processing written communication

  • Dyspraxia: Affects movement and coordination

  • Down syndrome: Causes intellectual disability and developmental delays

Common Challenges for Neurodivergent Children

Every neurodivergent child is unique. That said, some common areas where children may need additional support can include:

  • Emotional regulation and managing big feelings

  • Social communication and making or keeping friends

  • Difficulty with transitions or unexpected changes

  • Behavioral challenges at home or school

  • Anxiety, low mood, or low self-esteem

  • Sleep difficulties

As a parent, you may also experience stress, self-doubt, guilt, or burnout—especially when traditional parenting advice doesn't feel like the right fit for your child. To be clear, you are not doing anything wrong. You just need support tailored to your child’s needs, which is exactly how Modern Health can help.

How Modern Health Can Help

Modern Health supports the mental health and behavioral concerns that neurodivergent children and their parents often face. While we don’t currently offer services such as applied behavioral analysis, our therapy network has many experts ready to help your child and your family navigate these unique challenges and build upon existing strengths.

Note: Minor dependents under 18 have access to therapy only. Coaching is available to members ages 18 and older. Dependent eligibility is based on the benefit package selected by your company.
