Typically, therapists visits will be 45-60 minutes in length and can occur either in person or via video. The frequency of sessions varies by the individual, for example some people meet weekly while others meet monthly or as needed.
Therapists typically start each session with an introduction and review of expectations and confidentiality to make sure you are comfortable with them and their process. Typically, they will then ask you a series of questions to get a better understanding of your symptoms and background to best identify how you can work together to achieve your goals.
After this initial assessment, they will work collaboratively with you to formulate a treatment plan and review different methods to help you address your needs (e.g. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy).
At the end of your first session, they will likely give you action items that you can take away from the session and can discuss learnings during follow up sessions.
